About FGCK

Founded by the Yakubu Gowon administration as part of its post-war unity programme, Federal Government College Kaduna (FGCK) was established by the Federal Ministry of Education on January 25, 1973. It was originally located at a temporary site in central Kaduna, sharing the premises of Government College Kaduna, before moving to its permanent location in Malali about a year later.

At the time, the first two sets were treated to all sorts, going for horse riding sessions at Police College, swimming at Hamdala Hotel and guided tours of Kaduna. As the school's population grew, however, this could no longer be sustained.

However, the school continued to enjoy some of the best sporting facilities one could think of as among other things, it had high hurdles, a lawn tennis court, a hockey pitch and badminton facilities. FGCK regularly welcomed and visited other federal government colleges, where we took them on in sports such as football, handball, volleyball, table tennis, badminton, etc, in both male and female categories.

A co-educational secondary school in which every student was in the boarding house originally, FGC Kaduna started out with four houses. These were Congo, Niger, Nile and Zambezi and in 1976, Limpopo and Volta houses were added, with a seventh house, Senegal, added to the mix in 1981.

FGCK's first set started in January 1973 and sat its West African School certificate in May/June 1977. At the time, the school also had an A'Level programme, with Higher School certificate students in Lower and Upper Six up until the introduction of the 6-3-3-4 education structure in Nigeria in the late 1980s.

Like all other unity schools, the ethos of FCG Kaduna was to foster unity by bringing together the best and brightest children from all backgrounds, ethnicities and religions under one roof. FGC Kaduna has a unique position amongst unity schools as it is situated in a state that reflects the true ethnic, religious and cultural diversity of Nigeria.

Similar to many other unity schools, FGCK started off with expatriate principals, as the first two heads Mr Sommers and Mr Harwood, were Britons. When the school was founded, each set was made up an equal number of students from each state of the federation.

FGCK is situated in the Malali area of Kaduna and shares a boundary with River Kaduna. It is opposite the Kaduna State Technical College and the New Nigerian Newspapers staff housing quarters.

Despite being a relatively young school, FGC Kaduna has produced several prominent Nigerians. Among these are the former Jigawa State governor Ibrahim Saminu Turaki, captains of industry, military generals, diaspora community leaders, bank managing directors, heads of parastatals and legal luminaries.

Rising to the occasion when called upon was one of the greatest feats of FGC Kaduna as within five years, it was the undisputed Kaduna State handball champions. Also, in 1980, the school won its first piece of footballing silverware, lifting the Children's Day trophy, beating Government College 2-1 in an epic match that took place at Police College Kaduna.

Apart from sports, FGCK also excelled in all other areas, emerging as the Kaduna State quiz, debating and mock news champions. This of course in addition to the academic excellence which the school was reknown for.

Our educational facilities were second to none as apart from the fact that no class exceeded 35, FGCK had everything including a modern library and physics, chemistry and biology laboratories. Specialist subjects like art and technical drawing also had dedicated rooms where students could fine-tune their skills.

All these are in addition to the fact that the school had state-of-the-art facilities like the dining hall, assembly hall, administrative block and of course dormitories. Sadly, a lot of these facilities have deteriorated today as the student population has grown and maintenance has been neglected.
