Founded by the Yakubu Gowon administration as part of its post-war unity programme, Federal Government College Kaduna (FGCK) was established by the Federal Ministry of Education on January 25, 1973.

It was originally located at a temporary site in central Kaduna, sharing the premises of Government College Kaduna, before moving to its permanent location in Malali about a year later. However, the school continued to enjoy some of the best sporting facilities one could think of as among other things, it had high hurdles, a lawn tennis court, a hockey pitch and badminton facilities.
